FAIR OAKS MALL PRESENTS LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

Two-day event with more than 200 performers continues as one of the largest in the metro-Washington D.C. region
Fair Oaks Mall will host its 9th annual Lunar New Year celebrations on Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29, 2012 as it honors the Chinese year 4710, the year of the dragon. Ceremonies, performances and exhibitions will be presented from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, with most of the events centered in the Fair Oaks Mall Grand Court.
One of the largest Lunar New Year events of its kind, Fair Oaks Mall’s 9th annual Lunar New Year celebration is anticipated to attract more than 200,000 people to the retail center over the course of the two-day celebration. Presented by the Washington Hai Hua Community Center, the Lunar New Year celebrations will feature traditional Chinese dragon dances; music and dance performances; martial arts demonstrations; children’s crafts; and a special lantern festival.
More than 200 performers will participate in this year’s Lunar New Year festival, representing such countries and regions as China, Korea, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Polynesia and the 50th state of Hawaii.
Scheduled to participate in the opening ceremonies of the Lunar New Year celebrations on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. are Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly (D - 11th District); California Rep. Judy Chu (D - 32nd District); California Rep. Mike Honda (D - 15th District); Fairfax County, Virginia Board of Supervisors chairwoman Sharon Bulova and Supervisors Pat Herrity and Catherine Hudgins; Fairfax County, Virginia Health Director Dr. Gloria Addo Ayensu; Hank Chao, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Hai Hua Community Center; and Robbie Stark, General Manager of Fair Oaks Mall.
Fair Oaks Mall’s Lunar New Year is sponsored by Long & Foster Realtors, which will offer its Ask A Realtor event in the Fountain Court during both days of the celebrations.
Fair Oaks Mall’s Lunar year is presented by the Washington Hai Hua Community Center, which has been dedicated to working as a bridge between new Asian immigrants and American society since 1989. Through a wide range of activities and services, Hai Hua Community Center volunteers have provided educational, health and cultural outreach; programming for multi-cultural families on Fairfax and Montgomery County public access television; and assisted in Asian-American voter registration.
